Author's Note :
The English grammar school I went to decided, when I was 12 years old, that I should concentrate on classical languages and literature. Even then, the translations of Greek plays struck me as incomprehensible to actors and audiences. So when I began to write professionally for the theatre I seized every opportunity to try out new approaches to the problem of making these plays come alive again, working always from the original Greek texts.
