The Situation
Tonight, Alan is leaving for a trip out of town on business, and Kate’s friend Terry, is insisting the two of them go out for a ladies-only night at a consciousness raising group.
It gets complicated when Alan shows up at a colleague’s house, hoping to crash there for a few days. He reveals that, far from going on a trip, he’s actually been fired again, and needs time to find a new job to save his marriage.
It gets worse when his colleague, Brett, takes off for his own mysterious night out, leaving Alan to clean up his pants which have been stained with wine.
It gets embarrassing when, right after Brett leaves, his wife Dolly comes home, mistakes Alan, who walks in on her minus his pants, for a burglar and calls Security.
It gets tangled because, while they wait for the Security guy to turn up, Dolly recognizes Alan as her husband’s colleague and persuades him to go back and face his wife with the truth.
It gets doubly tangled when the Security guy, Jordan, arrives before Alan can leave and can’t figure out who is married to whom, but in the process is persuaded that Alan has left his wife and is planning to marry Dolly.
It gets tricky when, while all this is going on, back at Alan’s house, Kate and Terry return, having had a minor car accident, bringing the driver of the car with them - the very same Brett, Alan’s colleague who left on his own mysterious night out. Brett is suffering from the side effects of the wine he drank when Alan showed up, which doesn’t mix well with the medication he takes for his back pain. So the two women, whose own car now won’t start, call a friend to take him back home.
It gets dicey when, before the friend can arrive, Kate and Terry notice a shadowy figure prowling in the lawn outside, which leads them to call Security. They hide in the back yard, leaving Brett alone. Temporarily recovered, he wanders into the hall closet, where he passes out.
It gets frantic, when the 'prowler’ outside turns out to be Alan, who arrives with a bouquet of uprooted roses. just as the Security guy, Jordan again, arrives, assumes Alan is the prowler and won’t let him go until finally the women come back in to vouch for him.
It becomes a bigger problem for the two women when they have to get Alan out of the way until Brett’s ride shows up. They persuade Alan to go take a shower. Now they can breathe a sigh of relief.
Or can they? It gets critical when the friend who is to drive Brett back home arrives, and turns out to be Brett’s wife, Dolly, just as Brett begins to fight his way out of the coat closet.
It gets chaotic, when the two women, terrified they’ll be accused of seducing Brett, contrive to conceal Brett from Dolly.
It gets doubly chaotic when Kate is persuaded to go into the bedroom and keep Alan busy there while Terry gets rid of Dolly, only to be confronted by Dufton, Brett’s and Alan’s boss, who arrives to talk to Alan. That’s awkward, because Dolly is Dufton’s ex, and Terry has been secretly in love with Dufton for years, and now Brett, partially recovered, staggers in from the coat closet, which leads to Dolly’s suspicion that what is going here is a wife-swapping orgy, at which point Alan, in search of Kate, arrives from the shower without even a towel to cover him - all of which...
...is only the prelude to the real madness that results.
