Hawthorne Country

When Nikos Psacharopoulos, Artistic Director of the Williamstown Theatre Festival, invited me to create and direct a new show for their Second Theatre, I suggested a play based on the stories of Nathaniel Hawthorne. Writer Lou Berger (at the time, head writer on PBS' Sesame Street) and I chose as a framework Hawthorne's The Minister's Black Veil, and wove into it four more of Hawthorne's mysterious and compelling tales. We were fortunate that Richard Thomas, a gifted actor who was always willing to try something new, agreed to star in the show (in one scene he had to transform himself into a character called Feathertop, for which he wore an outside pumpkin over his head), and we found a talented newcomer, Allison Janney (later an Emmy winner for her television work in The West Wing), to play opposite him. I directed the play.
